Experience the countryside

Foto: Terje RakkeWALKING
Nature in Tokke is very varied, with mountains and valleys, lakes and waterways. You really should take a tour and enjoy the countryside. You can wander along marked paths or paddle your own canoe. In the wintertime you can choose between miles of marked ski tracks, or wide unspoilt snow-covered moor land.

A highly recomended trip is "Lårdalsstigen", wich you can read more about here.

THE TROLL AND HIS WIFE

If you take the hikingtrip Lårdalsstigen or the boat anong the canal you will be able to see two rock formations that the localt refer to as "Risen og Gygri" (The troll and his wife). This formation has a special myth behind it apperance, and so has a lot of other natural formations in the area.

Tokke has a rich and varied animal population. Here you can see Elk, Deer, Beaver and Eagles. We also have Lynx, Bear and Wolf, but it is not often that we have the opportunity to see them.

Many of our visitors enjoy the very special experience of meeting the Norwegian Elk in it’s natural environment. There are many elk in the woods in Tokke, and if you know where to go it is possible to see them. You can get information from the tourist office about organised Elk safaris.

Our little friend the beaver is most active at night. We therefore advise you to take one of the many Beaver safaris if you want to see him.

This spectacular natural attraction with a sheer drop of 350 meter from the edge of the cliff down to the river Tokkeåi below is really worth a visit! Because of the air stream up the face of the cliff it is said to be possible to throw a banknote over the edge and have it returned to you by the wind!

A GEOLOGICAL ELDORADO
Telemark is a paradise for those interested in geology. At the Vest-Telemark museum you can find out about the thousand-year history of the whetstone quarry at Eidsborg, or you can visit the mines at Åmdals Verk and take a tour down the copper mines! Everywhere in west Telemark you can find evidence of the many different mines that were dug to take out the many different minerals that are found here.

The changing colour of autumn in the forests around Tokke is a sight you will always remember. A tour on a clear autumn day is not to be missed, but ask at the tourist office about the elk hunting season before you set out, to avoid disturbing the hunt!

A tour with one of the canal boats – Victoria, and Henrik Ibsen - is to be recommended for those who like to see the landscape in a calm and relaxed way. Combined boat/bus round tours are very popular.

A FJORD IN THE MOUNTAINS
The variation in the landscape is striking. If you travel up to Dalen by water you will sail along our “fjord” Bandak with majestic mountain walls rising up on both sides from the water.

FLORA IN TOKKE
Tokke has both high mountains and deep valleys with a corresponding wide variety of plants and trees not normally found so far inland. On the south facing hillsides you can find lime, maple, ash and hazel. The many place names starting with Åm- tell us that elm is also very common here. In mid-summer the fields and hillsides around Tokke can offer an unbelievable variety of wild flowers.
